MATERIAL PROPERTY AND VOLUME EXERCISE

Students grades 9-12 will calculate the volume of a conical shaped stockpile, then calculate how much Portland Cement concrete highway pavement may be constructed from a stockpile volume of coarse aggregate.

 

Saskatchewan Mining Association Education Outreach

This organization provides free lesson plans for elementary, middle and secondary teachers and students. In addition to searching the database of activities, helpful references, career profiles, video series and more are offered.  Topics include potash mining, uranium processing, gold and coal mining, and related chemistry. Some reference materials are available in French.

Aquifer in a Cup

Students build a model to see what groundwater looks like and learn some basic groundwater vocabulary.

Electrowinning (EW)

Students conduct experiments to explore concepts in mineral processing engineering (also known as metallurgy), industrial process engineering, and chemical engineering to iteratively improve the design of an electrochemical copper refining process. An electric current is used to refine copper from the mineral malachite.

This book of the MineralsEd Career Series addresses the operating phase of the Mine Development Cycle. Following the discovery of an ore deposit, our mining engineers are hired to figure out if the deposit can be mined safely and economically. I am an Environmental Scientist

Following the discovery of a mineral deposit, our environmental scientists head to the proposed mine site to assess the environment and plan ways to minimize the impacts of mining. While the mine is operating, they monitor the effects of mining on the environment. After the mine closes, the environmental scientists work to return the land to its previous condition.
