A. 18 karat gold is a mixture of 75% gold with 25% other metals. Gold is very soft, so to strengthen it for use in jewelry, other metals like zinc, copper, or nickel are mixed (alloyed) with it.  Pure gold is 24 karat, so 18 karat gold is 18 parts out of 24 parts gold (three-quarters) and 6 parts out of 24 parts other metals (one quarter).
